WHAT WILL WHITE AMUR FISH COST?...

The $210/acre cost to buy the White Amur compares very favorably with $500/acre multiple herbicide treatments and the White Amur have been proven to work as they kept the Lake clean for 20 years. If we could have put the fish in July, we would have needed only $31,500. Each year we have to wait could cost several fold as much as required the previous year.

The LCA is of the opinion that introducing the White Amur in conjunction with herbicide treatments offers the best change of establishing an equilibrium of plants and fish in Lake Conroe. Unfortunately, P&W will not grant a permit to introduce the White Amur until it has been proven that herbicides are not controlling the spread of Hydrilla around our shorelines. The SJRA has been a tremendous help with funds and manpower to date and has spent approximately $75,000 per year for herbicide. For the last four years, the Lake Conroe Association (LCA), has been helping by paying for the monitoring of the weed infestation of Hydrilla, Giant Salvinia, and Water Hyacinth. That allows the SJRA to use its funds for buying and applying herbicides.

Even with the 700% increase in hydrilla during the past year, P&W still believes the White Amur should not be used unless all other efforts fail as they want to protect the “beneficial” weeds they planted and which cannot be treated without P&W approval. Approval of herbicide treatment of "beneficial weeds" are presently being granted but the approximate cost of $??? per acre of treatment must be borne by the property owner. Neighbors should ban together for these treatments because larger areas will have a smaller cost per area treated.
